Elders keep languages alive

Our Languages Matter is the theme of this year's NAIDOC Week.

NAIDOC week is an opportunity for all Australians to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people.

The beautiful poster, which won this year’s NAIDOC Poster Competition, uses artwork created by Wiradjuri artist, Joanne Cassady.

The imagery represents some of the many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages and nations across Australia.

Today only around 120 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages are still spoken.  These languages are being kept alive largely thanks to elders sharing them with the next generation.

Once again proving that we all can learn so much from our elders.
