Bernie's surprise visit
Angela Davies, Manager for Alzheimer’s Qld (AQ) Toowoomba, says she is incredibly proud of her team’s unique approach to developing engaging and personalised services for their clients.
“It’s all about choice. We match activities and outings with the individual’s interests,” Angela said. “Like the surprise outing we organised for Bernie Winkler.”
Bernie had shared memories of his family and expressed his wish to visit his brother some time.
Bernie’s family and the AQ team organised a visit to his brother’s farm and once all was arranged they kept the details a surprise.
“While on an outing to ‘Ipswich’ we let Bernie know he was actually going to visit his brother Leo that very day,” Angela said.
“Bernie couldn’t believe it and kept referring to the surprise as a ‘miracle’.”
After a happy reunion, the two brothers hopped on the ride-on mower and Leo showed Bernie all around the property.
After cake, a cuppa and a long chat, the group headed to Plainlands for lunch. Bernie saw his old primary school and when they decided to pop in. The Principal offered them a guided tour and introduced Bernie to the grade 6 students. Bernie enthusiastically shared stories with the children about his own youth in the area.
“Bernie happily talked about his trip the entire way home and just couldn’t stop smiling,” said Angela.
