  General Considerations

The main safety issues in the home are: falls; burns and scalds; and wandering away. Prevention of property damage is another important point. The following checklist is a simple guide to a safer home.

*

Good lighting is important. Avoid glare by appropriate use of curtains or blinds. Dark rooms and poor lighting may increase confusion and the risk of accidents such as falls.

*

Avoid shiny or highly polished floors. These reflect light producing glare and give the illusion of water on the floor, both of which create confusion for the person with dementia. These types of floors can also be very slippery.

*

Ensure that mats, floor rugs, carpets and other floor coverings are firmly secured. Loose floor coverings and shiny floors are major causes of falls in the home.

*

Temperature control gauges can be fitted to all hot water systems or faucets to ensure water is warm, but not hot enough to burn and scald.

*

Install an earthing switch to prevent fires from electrical shorts/wiring faults.
