  Approaching the Person

Talk to your relative using a gentle person to person approach. Be firm but tactful. By focusing on the unsafe behaviour, rather than attacking the person, you allow an opportunity for them to make the decision to stop driving (eg. "You seem to be ignoring traffic lights").

Enlist the help of a close family member, friend or associate to encourage the person not to continue driving. He or she may listen to someone in authority, eg. your doctor or priest. · If the person's abilities allow it, gradually decrease the person's amount of driving, by alternating between designated drivers, taxis, and public transport.
