Reduce background noise eg) turn off the radio or television.

Ensure there is good light and ensure you can see each other's face when talking.

*

Keep sentences short and specific, focussing on one idea at a time.

*

Ask questions that require a yes or no answer, rather than long explanations.

*

Allow time for the words you have said to sink in and for the other person to respond.

*

If it appears that the person with dementia did not understand, repeat the question. If there is still no response, reword the question.
