A
frustrating aspect of caring for someone with dementia,
is their ability to appear "normal" in front of others.
This is particularly true in the earlier stages of
the disease. The carer may often feel as though no
one believes them when they speak of the difficulties
they are experiencing.
Likewise,
visitors may criticise carers for speaking "down"
to the person with dementia. Such criticism really
hurts as these people are oblivious to the reality
of the situation. No doubt they would soon change
their mind if they had to live with the person with
dementia.
The
best solution is to talk with these people and explain
what is happening. Encourage them to continue to visit
because it is important for both you and the person
with dementia to keep in contact with others and be
a part of social life for as long as possible.
